Incoming Freshmen Expectations

Longview High School Volleyball

 

Tryouts August 4th –6th @ 6:30 A.M. / Lobo Coliseum

(multiple sessions)

***Must have physical completed by this date***

School Physicals on April 23rd

Attendance/Attire

·        Athletes are expected to be present and on time to every practice, game, or team function: no exceptions

·        Volleyball season starts three weeks before school starts.  You must be there for tryouts to make the team.

·        Athletes must be dressed in workout clothes.  No jeans, cut offs etc.  Come with outside running shoes and inside court shoes.  Proper attire includes a T-shirt, spandex tights or gym shorts, sneakers, socks, and knee pads.  

·        Bring your own water bottle and lunch.

·        If you make the team, we will issue you shirts that you must wear everyday for practice.  Also, you will need to purchase your own solid black tights. 

·        There will be a mandatory parent meeting for those girls who make the team on August the 6th from 6:00-7:00 PM in the cafeteria.

 

Volleyball Expectations

As incoming freshmen volleyball players, we expect you to have the following skills:

·        Overhand serving

o       Goal:  Make 8 of 10 serves in the court serving overhand

o       Great:  Serve different areas of the court on command

·        Underhand passing form

o       Goal:  pass 8 of 10 free balls so that they are settable

o       Great:  pass 10 of 10 free balls directly to target

·        Overhead passing (setting) form  (Setters)

o       Goal:  Get your hands on every ball passed, know 4 basic sets (4, 2, 1, C)

o       Great:  Know and set accurately the above + 3, slide, A and get a good set off a bad pass   

·        Serve-Receive

o       Goal:  Pass a settable ball on 7 of 10 serves

o       Great:  Pass a settable ball 10 of 10 serves from all three passing spots

·        Attacking (spiking)

o       Goal:  Know footwork and arm swing, and be able to hit the ball over and in the court off of a set.

o       Great:  Hit successfully off the four basic sets

·        Blocking

o       Goal:  Know blocking footwork and form

o       Great:  Successfully block or slow 2 of 5 hits.

·        Digging

o       Goal:  Be able to anticipate where the ball will be hit, tipped and know your coverage area

o       Great: Dig 2 of 5 hard spikes and 4 of 5 tips

 

Conditioning Expectations

·        Run a mile in less than 8:30

·        See conditioning/summer workout schedule
