Announcements: 

Sophomores and Juniors!!! On February15, 2013, TCU will host the annual Minority Student Leadership conference, which provides students with the opportunity to be exposed to the college environment.  This one-day conference will provide students with more personalized attention and hands-on experience in a college atmosphere.  Although, the event is in February, the DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS THURSDAY NOVEMBER 8^TH!! See Ms. Shorts in the College and Career center to sign up. 

Thank you to all of you who have contributed to help warm another family with a Coats for Kids donations.  Forever Friends has counted 144 coats donated from Longview High School!  The drive ends this week.  Coats will be dry cleaned for free by local cleaners  and then distributed on Sat., Nov. 10th  from 8 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Broughton Recreational Center; 801 MLK.  Children must be present with an adult.  Thank you, LHS, for your coat donations!  

Meetings and events……. 

There will be an FCCLA meeting Tuesday, November 7th, right after school in room 423.  We will be discussing the upcoming volunteer projects with Longview Ministries and Heartsway Hospice.  Please bring your dues. 

Johnny’s Pizza, 3052 N. Eastman Road, invites the community to dine from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 6^th.  Johnny’s Pizza will donate 20% of the evening's receipts from take out orders or inside dining to the Longview ISD Foundation, Inc. in support of the Foundation’s grants programs.  Invite your friends and family and join the Longview ISD Foundation and Johnny’s Pizza and enjoy delicious pizza, pasta, or sandwiches.

The Theatre Department has t shirts for sale for $5 and $6.  These are shirts from past plays that have been done at Longview High School. These shirts can be worn on Fridays.  Come by room 602, the black box in the Fine Arts building and support the Theatre Department.

This is a reminder to all students that there are cameras positioned every- where on this campus, from the parking areas to all of the buildings……. 

Lately we have noticed a lot of trash on the grounds especially in the parking areas.  There are enough trash containers conveniently placed all over the campus.  So please don’t be a little bug.  Keep Texas and especially LHS campus free of debris. 

Students—with the change in weather we have noticed an increase in all types of headgear.  The dress code states that headgear of any kind is prohibited on campus.  This includes hats, toboggans, scarves, and so on.  If you need to keep your head warm you can wear a hoodie outside the building.  We will be making this announcement all week.  After this you risk losing the headgear altogether.

October is coming to an end.    Lobo Coats for Kids donations total less than 50 coats!!!!!!!   Help warm another family by cleaning out closets of unused, outgrown, or new coats and donating them in an LHS Forever Friends' collection box.  Coats will be taken to participating dry cleaners for a free cleaning.  Then the community give away will be on Sat., Nov. 10th at Broughton Recreation Center from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Congratulations to……. 

This past Saturday the UIL Math Science Team went to Pine Tree for their first competition of the year.  In calculator, Andrew O’Connor placed 1^st, Chris Yu placed 3^rd, and Simone Macklin placed 4^th in their respective grade levels.  In Science, Andrew O’Connor placed 3^rd and Taylor Yuen placed 6^th among senior competitors while Ehi Ihionkhan placed 6^th in his grade level.  Other members that competed and placed in the top 10 were Judson Daniels, Sabrina Campbell, Oscar Martin, Jackson Schaap, and Addison Holcomb.  Overall the Team placed 3^rd out of all schools in competition.  If you see these student please congratulate them on a job well done!

LHS will host a college financial aid workshop for juniors and seniors and their parents tonight at 6:30 in the area outside the College and Career Center.  This is a great opportunity to learn about the kinds of financial aid you can receive so you can attend college.

This weekend your Lobo Cross Country teams competed at the District meet in Mesquite. We had four runners advance to the regional meet and they are Marcus Martinez, Quintin Dellers, Kevin Grisham and Amber Redic. Congratulate these athletes when you see them and GO LOBOS!

Congratulations to the lobo tennis team on an amazing year.  The lobos finished the year with a 19-5 record and advanced to the regional quarterfinals this year, the farthest in over 20 years. Congrats on a great season.

They are setting up early at approximately 7:30 to allow for you to take your picture before school. The yearbook is a historical record of everyone who attended and WORKED at the school that year. If you can't go before school, please have your picture taken during the school day ANY TIME THAT IS CONVENIENT FOR YOU.

Attention Skilled Spellers: If you are a talented speller and would like to build your SAT and ACT vocabulary skills, please consider joining the UIL Spelling and Vocabulary Team. The team is forming now and we will compete at our first practice meet in November. The team has a winning district record and usually advances to regional competition.  We will have a meeting after school today, the 25th,  in Mrs.Triece’s  Room 228, to  “get acquainted” and begin studying the spelling and vocabulary words. Even if you cannot stay for the meeting today, stop by to pick up the word list.

Congratulations to……. 

The PreAP Sculpture Students competed in the Carved Pumpkin Category Thursday night at Ellis Home and Garden's Pumpkin Glow. Co-winners were Hilario Campos and Jailene Romo: each took home a crisp $100 bill. Second place went to Kaylan Fambles earning $50. Please congratulate these students when you see them in your classroom or the hallway! 

Over the weekend the Longview High School Speech and Debate team traveled to the Hallsville High School October Games Speech and Debate Tournament. This was the second tournament of the season and Longview High School came home very successful. The Freshman debate of Seema Brimmer and Trevor O'Connor took 6th place in varsity Cross Examination debate. Seema Brimmer was also the top speaker in CX Debate and Trevor took 3rd speaker. In Lincoln Douglas Debate, Sophomore Erick Ramirez took 4th place and Freshman Mallary Riddle took 3rd. Mallary also took top speaker in LD. This is an amazing accomplishment for these students who have only competed at one other tournament. Please congratulate these students and wish them good luck when they travel to the next tournament on November 3rd.

The Lobo Band competed at UIL marching contest this past Saturday.  The performance earned the band a first division from the entire judging panel.  All of the comments from the judges and directors were very complimentary.   This first division marks the 63rd back-to-back first division rating at UIL marching contest which allows the Longview Band to maintain the national record for consecutive superior ratings in the state contest.  Congratulations Lobo band!

Longview High School Cosmetology Department will be selling Jean Day passes for $1 each. The pass will be bright colored circled bracelets that will allow jeans to be worn on the Wednesday before Homecoming October 24th. The bracelets may be purchased during all lunches beginning the 15th-24th on A-Days or in the Cosmetology Department.

This is Spirit Week.

Today is Marvelous Monday – Transform yourself into your favorite super hero and wear Super Hero Shirt.  Tomorrow is Twin Day Tuesday – Match another student.  Remember students that you still have to wear uniform pants.  The tops may vary and you may use accessories to complement the day’s theme.  Jeans may only be worn on Friday.  If you wear jeans during the week – you are out of dress code.

Longview High School Cosmetology Department will be selling Jean Day passes for $1 each. The pass will be bright colored circled bracelets that will allow jeans to be worn on the Wednesday before Homecoming October 24th. The bracelets may be purchased during all lunches beginning the 15th-24th on A-Days or in the Cosmetology Department.

Over the weekend the Longview High School Speech and Debate team traveled to the Hallsville High School October Games Speech and Debate Tournament. This was the second tournament of the season and Longview High School came home very successful.. The Freshman debate of Seema Brimmer and Trevor O'Connor took 6th place in varsity Cross Examination debate. Seema Brimmer was also the top speaker in CX Debate and Trevor took 3rd speaker. In Lincoln Douglas Debate, Sophomore Erick Ramirez took 4th place and Freshman Mallary Riddle took 3rd. Mallary also took top speaker in LD. This is an amazing accomplishment for these students who have only competed at one other tournament. Please congratulate these students and wish them good luck when they travel to the next tournament on November 3rd.

The Lobo Band competed at UIL marching contest this past Saturday.  The performance earned the band a first division from the entire judging panel.  All of the comments from the judges and directors were very complimentary.   This first division marks the 63rd back-to-back first division rating at UIL marching contest which allows the Longview Band to maintain the national record for consecutive superior ratings in the state contest.  Congratulations Lobo band!

It is important to get to class on time.  We are still having too many students wandering the halls after the tardy bell.  Students--beginning tomorrow you will only be allowed one minute to be admitted to class after the designated time since we will not have bells anymore except for lunch time.  Any time beyond the one minute grace-period will mean you will have to go to the tardy center for a pass.  Your teachers have also been instructed to not let you into the class room if you have already collected four or more tardies for that class.  Instead they are to send you to the tardy center where you will be assigned after school detention.

Juniors, it is time to register for the October 17th PSAT.  You will receive a registration form in your English classes, and forms are also available in the College and Career Center.  Cost of the test is $15.00. The PSAT is a very important test that begins the National Merit Scholar competition.  Information about the PSAT is also on the LHS Guidance and Counseling website.  See Mrs. Ray or Ms. Shorts in the College and Career Center if you have questions.

The first organizational meeting of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) will be held today immediately after school in room 423 of the Career Tech Building.  We will be discussing leadership opportunities, volunteerism, and club membership.  Any family and consumer science student can join and participate in this organization. Light refreshments will be served.  Come join the fun.

The officers of the DECA club decided to recognize a teacher, a student, a paraprofessional, a secretary, a DECA student, and a custodian, every three weeks as one of their extraordinary projects.  They call them “Feature People” at Longview High School. 

The following people have been chosen as “Feature People”on LHS’ campus for the 2^nd three weeks.

October is National Anti-Bullying Month. Wednesday, October 10, is National Unity Day and everyone who is against bullying is being asked to wear orange that day. To emphasize National Anti-Bullying Month and to encourage everyone at LHS to wear orange, the Gay Straight Alliance is hosting a week of activities for Oct. 8 – 12 that have been approved by Mr. Brewer.

• Monday – orange Unity Ribbons will be handed out to those who wish to wear them.

• Tuesday – Crush Bullying and buy an Orange Crush drink after school

• Wednesday – Wear orange – the shirt doesn’t have to be a polo shirt, it can be a t-shirt, as long as the pants meet dress code. Also, stop by and sign the Anti-Bullying Petition at a table in the breezeway or you can sign it electronically at http://www.pacer.org/bullying/digitalpetition

• Thursday –“Orange you tired of Bullying?” will be the message as oranges are handed out to anyone who wants one.

Any club who wishes to participate is welcome to create their own orange ribbons and have their club members wear orange on Weds.

The UIL Academic team would like to thank you for your attendance at "Longview High School's got Talent" on Saturday evening. We had twenty fantastic acts plus two phenomenal teacher acts - Kristina Glenn and Heather Cisco. Winning acts were: 3rd Place "Let Go, Let God" Tyauanna Benton, Reggie Smith, Cadell Williams; 2nd Place "Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# Minor" Chris Yu; 1st Place "Bombs and Shooting Stars" Kimberley Elliott.  Congratulations to these students!

Congratulations to the boys and girls Cross Country Team for winning 1st place in the Gladewater Invitational over this past weekend. 

The SAT is October 6^th (this Saturday). If you have signed up for this test you must bring your admissions ticket and drivers license or school ID card. You will not be let in without both items. Please be here on time and look for signs for the testing room.

IB students will be selling wristbands during lunches today and Monday for Learning for Limbs Jean Day on Tuesday, Oct. 3rd.  A $1.00 donation will allow you to wear jeans along with a green wristband on Tuesday.  A $2.00 donation will allow you to wear jeans AND a spirit shirt along with a yellow wristband on Tuesday.  If you lose the wristband you will have to purchase another.  All money collected will go toward the purchase of an artificial limb for someone in need in Africa. 

Seniors, if you are interested in attending Louisiana Tech University, the College and Career Center now has information about the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Out-of-State Fee Scholarship.  Come by and pick up the information. - Mrs. Ray in the College and Career Center has the opportunity to nominate a senior For The East Texas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Spark Award $1,000 scholarship.  If you have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the promotion of philanthropy and volunteerism in East Texas, please see Mrs. Ray.  You could be a winner!
