Announcements for October 31

This is Red Ribbon Week – We encourage all to make smart, drug free choices.    Today – is crazy sock day.   

Any student that has more than 7 unexcused absences – you need to see your assistant principal to schedule make up days. 

Students – Please utilize your lunch periods to your benefit make use of this time to go to the bath room and get a drink of water since drinks are not allowed in the building.  There are too many students wanting to get out of class to use the bath rooms.  

For teachers….closing doors and send kids to get tardy passes. 

All of our substitute teachers will be attending a training program at the Administration Office this coming Monday.  We encourage all of our teachers to avoid absences if at all possible. 

Seniors, if you have signed up for a transcript to be mailed to a college with campuses at different locations, you MUST give the Registrar the specific campus…for example, Blinn College, University of Houston, University of Arkansas, University of Texas are just a few of the colleges which have several different campuses.   If the Registrar is unsure of which campus you meant, she will NOT be able to mail the transcript.   In the past, Mrs. Fugler has tracked students down in the classroom to ask which campus they wanted…she has decided that it is not her responsibility, it is YOUR responsibility to be sure you have given her all the information she needs.    If you have access to e-mail, you or your parents may e-mail information to her at pfugler@lisd.org.    

REMINDER:  Students are ONLY allowed to park in the student parking lots at the front of the school.  Any student parking in any other areas during regular school hours will be fined $25.00 and could lose their campus driving privileges. 

Attention Science Club Members: Your catalog orders are due now!!  Please return your orders to Mrs. Key or Mrs. Merrill as soon as possible.  The order will go to the catalog company by Wednesday, November 5^th!!!!!  The more orders you turn in, the further we can go on our first field trip! 

All students interested in being on the Lobo Math Team please see Mr. Cunningham in room 243. There will be a meeting for students interested on Tuesday, November 4, at 3:45 in room 243.

Attention all French and Spanish Club Members: Wednesday, November 5th there will be an International Food Night in the cafeteria at 6:00.  If you are interested in coming, sign up to bring a dish (recipes are available) in Mrs. Dutch's or Mr. Mananita's room.  This event is open to any other faculty or staff members that would like to join us as well. 

We are still collecting can goods for the Hwy 80 Rescue Mission food drive.  There is a drop box across from Mrs. Voyles’ office.  The freshmen class challenge with the junior class is still going on.  Your response has been great.  We have received several containers full of can goods and other food items. Keep up the good work.

Longview’s own Art Car Club meets Tuesdays at 4:00 PM in Mr. Hull’s art room #10.  Be a part of the group that will transform a regular car into an awesome art car to compete in Houston, TX.

Football tickets are on sale at the Athletic Office today from 8:00 until 12:00 since the game between Pine Tree and Longview will be tonight in Tyler.

For students and teachers – The Roadhouse Steak House Restaurant will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs at Ware Elementary Fall Fest this evening from 5:00 to 7:00.  The price is $2.00.  The steakhouse will contribute $1.00 to the school for every hamburger and hot dog sold.

Students – it has been brought to our attention that many of you are not utilizing your lunch periods to your benefit make use of this time to go to the bath room and get a drink of water since drinks are not allowed in the building.  There are too many students wanting to get out of class to use the bath rooms. 

Teachers and Students – Football tickets are only on sale at the Athletic Office today and Wednesday from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM, and Thursday from 8:00 until 12:00 since the game between Pine Tree and Longview will be Thursday night in Tyler. 

Students, unless you have a pass from the nurse, you are not permitted to ride the elevator. 

Teachers, please do not hold your students late in class.  They need to get to their next class as soon as possible.  Do not allow students to leave class for bathroom breaks, and water breaks.  Do not send your student out of class without a pass in their hand.   

A reminder to all students that holes in jeans or any other clothing is not acceptable.  

The Longview High School Interact Club has challenged the Pine Tree High School “Buc Guard” to a Pizza eating contest.  This event will take place at Double Dave’s Pizza on the loop at 8 PM. Wednesday night.  Come early and enjoy the all- you- can- eat pizza buffet for only $5.50.  Be there to support our pizza team and cheer them on to victory.  There will be no Interact Meeting tonight.

This weekend at the White Oak Debate Tournament we had Tanreka Smith, Aaron Turner, Merriah Jackson all walk away with good speaking points.  As well as the teams of Johnathan Miles/Lavincia Morgan, Britney Brown/Juan Navarro doing really well and walking away with good speaking points.  The team of T'Corey Wright and Tristan Moss went undefeated and walked away with fifth place.  Congrats to the whole debate team and remember GO LOBOS!

Longview High School will be conducting a mock election today, Oct 28 during their social studies classes in the TLC lab and Library.  Students will need to produce their picture ID to vote. Students will use a state-of-art online voting system as they participate in a mock election program sponsored by the Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI), a national civic education program based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. With millions of students expected to vote nationwide, the YLI Mock Election is the largest secure, student-only online mock election in the nation.  National and statwide results of the YLI Mock Election will be available October 31.

The Lobo Band won a First Division at UIL Marching Contest for the 59^th consecutive year last Saturday.  Congratulations Band for this record performance! Courtney Springs and Laramie Forbes won first divisions on Solos.  Alli Baker, Miranda Hohlt, and Lauren Lemmon won a first division for a twirling Trio at UIL Solo and Ensemble last Wednesday in Lufkin.  Congratulations ladies!

It is once again time to select a new design for our LISD birthday cards.  We plan to use student artwork for this card.  We will pick the best designs that are submitted and put them on display at the ESC where LISD staff members may vote on their favorites. Announcements for October 15

Teachers – please submit your 2nd period roll no later than 9:05 every day. 

Students – it has been brought to our attention that many of you are not utilizing your lunch periods to your benefit make use of this time to go to the bath room and get a drink of water since drinks are not allowed in the building.  There are too many students wanting to get out of class to use the bath rooms. 

Teachers and Students – Football tickets are only on sale at the Athletic Office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM and on Fridays from 8:00 until 12:00. 

Attention Old Z Club members the meeting has been changed to tonight at 6:30 in room 119. You must attend! All Z Club members Dues must be turned in by November 13th.

There are 28 $5,000.00 Horatio Alger Scholarships available for any graduating senior in the state of Texas that wishes to pursue four years of college in Texas.  In addition, there is a $5000 scholarship offer for an essay contest.  The offer is from the International Order of the Golden Rule.  Submissions must address the theme, “What my family means to me,” in 500 – 1000 words.  Essays should be original and unpublished work.  The essays should be turned into Mrs. Milam by Wednesday, November 12^th.

On Saturday night, former Longview High School student, Jose Torres, represented the United States of America in a Soccer Game against Cuba in Washington D.C.  Jose left Longview in 2005 to pursue a professional soccer career in Mexico.  However, the biggest moment of his life so-far came this weekend as he was part of the U.S. team that beat Cuba 5-1.  He played the last half hour, and has been selected to play again for the U.S. against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night. 

The Interact Club will meet at 7:30 pm. on Tuesday in the cafeteria. 

Please take time to congratulate the debate team Aaron Turner, Lavincia Morgan, and Jonathan Miles all walked away with high speaking points.  Debate Captain Tanreka Smith placed third in the Lincoln Douglas portion of the tournament.

The first annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration will be held October 13^th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kilgore College’s Dodson Auditorium.  There will be food, musical entertainment and dance performances by the Kilgore College students.  Come join the fun.

There are 28 $5,000.00 Horatio Alger Scholarships available for any graduating senior in the state of Texas that wishes to pursue four years of college in Texas.  In addition, there is a $5000 scholarship offer for an essay contest.  The offer is from the International Order of the Golden Rule.  Submissions must address the theme, “What my family means to me,” in 500 – 1000 words.  Essays should be original and unpublished work.  The essays should be turned into Mrs. Milam by Wednesday, November 12^th. 

Lifetouch will be here to take faculty and underclassmen pictures on Tuesday, October 7^th in the Little Theatre during English classes.  Order forms will be placed in teacher’s boxes and at the receptionist desk.  Teachers can also distribute the order forms to your 2^nd period classes.  See Mrs. Woods in Room 258 for more information. 

Come join the FCA every Thursday at 7:30 in the morning in the Little Theater. 

There will be a Financial Aid program presented on October 13^th at 6:00 PM in the Little Theatre.  All students and parents are encouraged to attend this meeting as you will be given information on filling out financial aid forms. 

It is once again time to select a new design for our LISD birthday cards.  We plan to use student artwork for this card.  We will pick the best designs that are submitted and put them on display at the ESC where LISD staff members may vote on their favorites. If you and your students would like to participate in this project, please see Mrs. Voyles for the guidelines.  

Here is the schedule of events for students for homecoming week: 

Tuesday – Hat Day (not to be worn in class)
Wednesday – Twinkie Day (Get with a friend and dress alike) – must be in dress code.
Thursday – Favorite Team Day (wear the jersey/shirt of your favorite college/pro team) with dress code bottom
Friday – Spirit Day (Go ALL out and show your school spirit)  

French club will be having their first Movie Night on Wednesday, October 15th after school in room 200.  October 15th is also the final day to turn in French Club dues ($10) and tee-shirt money ($14). Tee-shirts will be ordered ONLY for people who have already paid.  Any student currently in French or has had at least 2 years of French are welcome and encouraged to join.

Longview High School will offer a PSAT tactical strategies course prior to the October 15^th PSAT test.  This course will begin on Saturday, October 4^th.  The cost for the course is $45.00 which includes all materials.  Please see your counselor, English Teacher or Mrs. Buie to pick up a registration form.  There are some scholarships available.  See Mrs. Buie for scholarship information. 

Longview’s Rock the Vote will be hosting a free concert in order to inspire the youth ages 18 and up to get registered to vote and get involved in the political process.  The concert will be held Saturday, October 4^th at 6:00 PM at the LOBO Coliseum.  Featured recording artist will be Monica.  For more Information on this event, call 903-918-0637 or 903-241-0994.

• We are only interested in the front of the card—we will add wording on the inside later.

• Simple designs (using no more than three colors) reproduce better than “busy” pictures.

• When using words, simplicity and spelling are important.

• Be sure that the student’s name, grade and campus are written on the back of the design.

• Entries are due in my office no later than November 7.

• We will return all entries that are not selected in case your students want to keep them.
