2007 Summer Opportunities for Juniors

Sizzling Summer Prep Program at Lon Morris College is a program exclusively designed for students with learning differences. The program is 5 and 1/2 weeks of radical readiness! The classes are taught by our dedicated instructors in small classes. Tutoring and lab assistance are available for all coursework. These college level courses in core classes help to give students a head start on the freshman year or continuation of a college career. The program offers full room and board as well as recreational activities including pool privileges. Activities are planned on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This program is available to students who just graduated or those who are getting ready to enter their senior year in high school. Cost of the program is $3800, which includes up to 9 hours of tuition and fees, room and board as well as planned activities. Georgetown University offers a summer program for high school students. Summer College for High School Students offers outstanding students the opportunity to expand their studies with college courses taken in an intensive yet supportive college environment. Students live on campus, attend class with undergraduate Georgetown students, and are encouraged to take advantage of the many resources available in our nation's capital. Students in Summer College for High School Students enroll in one or two lower division undergraduate courses appropriate to their interests, background, and previous academic achievement.  They will attend class, participate in various programs planned by the counseling staff, and learn about the importance of time management. Texas Mathworks is a summer program offered by Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Developing students' natural math abilities earlier is critical to their success in algebra and more advanced math. Mathworks programs are raising the level of mathematics for all students, while developing our leaders for the 21st century. The Texas Mathworks Honors Summer Math Camp is an intensive summer program for outstanding high school students who are excited about doing mathematics-- the goal of the program is to develop our talented youth by providing challenging courses in a unique learning environment. During their 6-week stay at Texas State University students will enjoy classes such as elementary number theory, combinatorics, and Topology as well as weekend excursions including a trip to Bamberger Ranch, Enchanted Rock, and our beautiful San Marcos River. Eligible students are those who have completed the 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grade and submit an application and teacher recomendation to Texas Mathworks before April 30, 2007. Admission decisions will be made from March 1 through May 30. The maximum cost to any student is $2,400. Students are eligible for scholarships based on income and other family circumstances. PROMES (pronounced "promise") is an acronym for Program for Mastery in Engineering Studies. PROMES provides engineering students with recruitment, academic advising, workshops, scholarships and job opportunities. One such opportunity is MESET (Mentoring and Enrichment Seminar in Engineering Training). This is a summer camp for current Juniors at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering. Camp fees and room and board are paid for by camp sponsors; students are required to pay only for meals during the mid program weekend. Students who have just completed their junior year in high school are eligible to attend. MESET is looking for high-aptitude students who can demonstrate an interest in the field of engineering and who are strong in the areas of math and science. As a MESET program participant, you will get an inside look at the field of engineering and what it takes to earn a degree in engineering from the University of Houston. You will be able to interact with engineering professors and industry professionals currently working as engineers in the Greater Houston area. By living on campus, you will experience college life and become familiar with UH. To apply to the MESET summer program, fill out and return the application on the back of the printable brochure. Along with the application, you are required to submit a copy of your high school transcript and one letter of recommendation from your high school counselor, which should include: 
(1) high school rank
(2) classification
(3) overall grade point average
(4) if taken, scores from the PSAT, SAT or ACT
(math, verbal and combined scores)
The application deadline is April 15, 2006.

The Washington Intern Experience - The Washington Workshops Foundation offers the the Washington Intern Experience to motivate high school students interested in government and politics. Students can attend a three to six weeks internship in a Congressional office or politically related committee, council or state office on or near Capitol Hill. Students are also given the opportunity to conduct an in-depth study on legislative politics. The three week internship costs $3250 and additional week add-ons are priced on a pro-rata proportional basis. The cost includes full tuition, a workshops staff member's access at all times, breakfast and dinner each day in the campus cafeteria, and daily transportation to and from campus to the placement offices. This also includes a non-refundable $150.00 application fee. Students may schedule attendance for a three, four, five or six week program between June 17 and July 28, 2007. Students should apply by completing an enrollment card, and submitting it along with the nonrefundable fee of $150.00, a typed resume (see the requested information on the website), a letter of character reference, a letter of academic reference, and a one page typed essay entitled, "Why I Want to be a Washington, D. C. Intern."

US Military Academy Summer Leaders Seminar - High School juniors are invited to attend either of two West Point's Summer Leaders Seminar sessions. The first session is June 2 - 8, 2007 and the second session is scheduled for June 9 - 15, 2007. This seminar provides attendees with a better understanding of the academic, physical, and leadership development programs at a service academy that feature small classes, a caring faculty, professional career preparation, and a foundation for future graduate study. Only 800 juniors from across the nation will be able to attend the two sessions. To be able to apply you must be in the top fifth of you class, on the Recommended Graduation Plan (this is Texas's college preparatory curriculum), and should have demonstrated leadership potential by participation, election/selection to office, and honors earned in extracurricular athletic activities. The Us Naval Academy Seminar (NASS) offers an opportunity for juniors to visit the Naval Academy for one week during the summer of 2007. During NASS students experience all aspects of the naval Academy including academics and midshipman life and receive an overview of Navy and Marine Corps service options after graduation. There are 3 dates from which to choose:

Session 1     June 2 - 7
Session 2     June 9 -  14
Session 3     June 16 - 21

To be eligible for this opportunity applicants should be:

  • Unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support a child, children or other individual(s);
  • Superior high school performance: 3.5+ GPA (4.0 scale) or equivalent, rank in the top 20 percent of the class, and/or strong PSAT, SAT, or ACT results;
  • Demonstrated achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities, especially demonstrating leadership potential in these areas;
  • Physically fit and in good health with normal vision (20/40 or correctable to 20/20);
  • Positive attitude, self-disciplined, and of good moral character.

The tuition to attend a session is approximately $300, which pays for your room and board, as well as a variety of materials. Plan on bringing extra cash for snacks and souvenirs.

Harvard Summer School - For over 40 years Harvard has welcomed high School students into its summer Secondary School Program and they plan to continue this tradition in 2007. Students in all grade levels can choose from among dozens of Harvard Summer School Courses that include acting, creative writing, math, language, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, just to name a few. Students actually take college courses along with Harvard College Students while at the same time meet students from around the world, take part in social/recreational and college prep activities. Most courses are taught on an 8-week format, although there are several 4-week intensive courses. According to program creators, by the time the summer ends you will have grown both as a student and as a person. Tuition & fees range from approximately $3000 to $5000, depending on the courses taken and housing and insurance costs are added to this. However, financial aid is available for students who qualify. Science & Technology Preview (STeP) Camp - TSTC in Marshall, Texas is hosting a science and technology camp this summer for students of all grad levels, including seniors who will graduate in June of 2007. The camp is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and is free to participants, both male and female. The dates of the camp are June 5 - 8 and students will spend 3 nights in resident dorms on the TSTC Campus in Marshall. Currently, there is only an information flyer available, but applications and brochures are coming soon and will available in the upstairs counseling center.
