Important
Dates for Seniors!
Longview High School will hold its annual Senior Scholarship Night on
Tuesday, May 14, at 6:30 PM in the Mickey Melton Center's auditorium.
All seniors will be notified if they are included in evening's
presentation.
Longview High School's graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, May
31, at 7:30 PM in Lobo Stadium.
We
Are Proud of Our Seniors!
Andrew
O’Connor, a Longview High School senior, has been named a National
Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist. He is among 16,000 students
nationwide – less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors – to
receive the honor, and is competing for a share of more than $32 million
in college scholarships.
The field of semifinalists was narrowed from about 1.5 million high
school juniors, who entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program
by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test.
O’Connor is an International Baccalaureate student, National Honor
Society member and NASA High School Aerospace Scholar. His
extracurricular activities are numerous, including the Technology
Student Association, in which he serves as chapter president and has
been on regional, state and national winning teams; Longview High
School’s 2011-12 District Champion Academic UIL team; and the Texas Bank
& Trust Student Board of Directors, on which he serves as vice chair.
O’Connor is also an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of
America.
He is the son of Tim and Rose O’Connor.
O’Connor plans to pursue a degree in nuclear engineering at either Texas
A&M University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“I am thrilled by the number of opportunities that being a National
Merit Semifinalist offers me,” he said.
The field of 16,000 semifinalists will be narrowed in February, with
scholarship awards announced in the spring.
From November through May, Longview
High School students competed for over 150 scholarships. For some of
these individual scholarships, Longview High School students submitted
as many as sixty applications. Their efforts were rewarded as
these students have earned $2,240,427.00. The Class of 2012 exceeded the
Class of 2011's scholarship total by $657,586.00.
Longview High School appreciates the
many local businesses, clubs, organizations, churches, sororities, and
fraternities that raise money so that these deserving students can
receive financial assistance for college, and it appreciates the
colleges, universities, and the military that saw the potential in the students and offered them generous academic, athletic and military
scholarships.
IMPORTANT NEWS YOU
CAN USE
Seniors,
Texas state law now requires that you receive a bacterial meningitis
shot before entering college. Talk to your doctor about this
important shot.
Students,
if you need a transcript, you may call and request one through Mrs.
Watson, the LHS receptionist, at 903-663-1301. Mrs. Watson will
tell you when you can pick up your transcript. If you have
requested several transcripts, there will be a $2.00 charge per
transcript. Students at LHS may sign up for a transcript with Mrs.
Fugler, the registrar. Sign the list on her door.
Hispanic
students searching for scholarships should check out
www.LatinoCollegeDollars.org. At this website you can find
information about scholarships and download the FAFSA, the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid, in both English and Spanish.
 Juniors,
prepare to take a college entrance exam during the spring of your junior
year, not before!
Click on "Testing" on the menu bar above for information about SAT and
ACT testing.
East
Texas Educational Opportunity Center offers students
and parents of the East Texas Area FREE assistance with all matters
regarding college and career preparation.
