LHS Proudly Presents Its
2006 - 2007

Texas Scholars

Longview is the birthplace of a unique organization called GLOBE, or the Greater Longview Organization of Business and Education. It was created to encourage students to take a more challenging course of study throughout high school, in order to better prepare them to take their place in the workplace of the future. Students who chose the more rigorous academic courses were designated as GLOBE Scholars and were recognized in the community with a prestigious recognition ceremony held on the campus of LeTourneau University, a special photo edition of the Longview News Journal, and a special ribbon medal to wear at their school's graduation ceremony. The program was adopted by the state of Texas and came to be known as  the Texas Scholars Program. Locally, GLOBE created yet another level of recognition, known as the Texas Scholar with Distinction. Local area school districts were given the option to set their own extra requirement(s) to be designated as a Texas Scholar with Distinction. The name for this level has been changed to Texas Scholar with Merit. Today, The Texas Business & Education Coalition oversees the Texas Scholars Program at the state level, and  states that its mission is to "Bring business and education leaders together to help secure the future of Texas by improving the performance of the State’s publicly funded education systems." The program still encourages students to take a more rigorous course of study in high school to prepare them for the workforce and higher education. GLOBE still oversees the local Longview area program.

The Texas Scholars program is in the process of undergoing change at the state level as well as the local level.  Some of these changes will affect the graduates of the class of 2007, but only at the local level. Below is a list of the academic requirements of these students.

Academic Requirements for the Graduating Classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009

  • Texas Scholars must meet all requirements to graduate on the Texas Recommended or Distinguished Graduation Programs.

  • Texas Scholars with Merit must meet all requirements to graduate on the Texas Recommended or Distinguished Graduation Programs AND take a 4th year of math that requires Algebra II as a prerequisite.

GLOBE has adopted as its mission statement -"...To improve the regional workforce by helping parents and students understand the maximum value of the K through 12 experience." To this end they have reorganized the entire scope of the GLOBE/Texas Scholars program. The lengthy recognition ceremony previously held on the LeTourneau University campus will be replaced with a GLOBE Career EXPO in which Texas Scholars and Texas Scholars with Merit can explore career possibilities and meet with representatives from area businesses and industries. Parents and students will become enlightened about the career opportunities available to their student in the immediate area as well as special programs that can financially assist their student in earning educational degrees that can help them attain a reasonably secure financial future. The local newspaper will most likely report those students who have achieved the TS and TSM distinctions. Photographs will no longer be published, however. The LHS Guidance Center will post a list of its students with the TS and TSM designations.

Beginning with current 9th graders (graduates of 2010), the changes to the academic requirements for Texas Scholars and Texas Scholars with Merit are as follows:

Academic Requirements for the Graduating Classes of 2010 and Beyond
(Current LHS 9th Graders and Beyond)

  • Texas Scholars must meet all requirements to graduate on the Texas Recommended or Distinguished Graduation Programs.

  • Texas Scholars must achieve the Texas Ready standard on at least one standardized test. (Click the link to view the specific tests and required minimum scores to be deemed Texas Ready.)

  • Develop and carryout an individual  plan for their four years of high school and transition to college, the workplace, the military, or some other endeavor of their choosing. (LHS has required its students to create and maintain such a plan for several years now, so this requirement is already in place and being met.)

  • Texas Scholars with Merit must meet all of the above requirements AND take a 4th year of math that requires Algebra II as a prerequisite.
