MAINTAIN YOUR HARD DRIVE

Combine regular maintenance with some periodic housekeeping on your files and you can greatly increase the efficiency, speed, and capacity of your computer’s storage space.

Run Scan Disk, Defragment, and Virus Detecting on a regular basis.

REMOVE UNNECESSARY TEMPORARY FILES

Occasionally there are temporary files on the hard disk that are just simply taking up room and they are usually unnecessary. To remove unnecessary temporary files, check disk files, and history files follow these steps:

  1. Left-click Start

  2. Highlight Find and left-click on Files or Folders

  1. Type in *.tmp, *.chk, *.hst and then left-click Find Now


  1. You will see a listing of files found with the .tmp extenstions, .chk extensions, and the .hst extensions

    **Note: Do Not Delete any Yellow file folders in this listing!***

     

  2. Highlight the C:\windows\temp files and File, Delete. 
  3. Highlight the .chk files and delete. 
  4. Highlight the .hst files and delete. These deleted files will be placed in the recycle bin.
  5. Empty your recycle bin.  Right click the recycle bin icon and click on empty recycle bin.
