Mrs. Jeffery
Welcome to Mrs. Jeffery’s Bistro where we are cooking up learning in various aspects of the curriculum. Science and social studies has been integrated with the reading skills through main idea and summarizing. In science, students have practiced the scientific method by classifying, creating, and observing Brine shrimp using various scientific processes. Cole Brazil's mom brought a python snake for the class to touch and observe his eating process. After researching their favorite animal, students will culminate their study of animals by creating a project based on The Import Book by Margaret Wise Brown. In language arts, we got to know one another. Students created person books, which included an autobiographical poem and other favorites as we practiced the writing process with an emphasis on proofreading. In math, students created arrays to practice various math skills. TAKS Coach/Sheila Webster and Sandy Cole We are looking forward to a GREAT year! We are identifying students’ needs by disaggregating data from numerous sources, administering reading inventories, and creating individual student profiles to track student progress. We are also preparing needed assessments of skill areas in math and reading. Students have been exposed to different genres on the reading assessments in order to key in on areas such as character analysis, main idea, summarization, plots, etc. Math skills covered have included using place value, estimation, computation, and number sentences in real life situations. We are off to a wonderful start! In reading we discussed various types of genres. Our students published their first composition of “many” to come! In other subjects. As scientists, we classified everything from fingerprints to “aliens.” Then as mathematicians, we are creating our own multiplication cards. We are busily working to become experienced cartographers by creating models of the globe in social studies. Mrs. Baron and Mrs. Hale In math, we have been creating picture representations for multiplication and division facts. We are now trying to commit those facts to our permanent memory. In science, we performed an experiment testing bird beak adaptations. We followed up the experiment with a research project about bird beak adaptations. Students created posters, booklets, and other visual models of their research. In writing we have been planning and writing personal narratives. After all, the subject we know the most about is ourselves! In social studies we have been learning map skills and about the variety in the great state of Texas. We are now applying this knowledge in Texas Region research groups. We have been reading realistic fiction books to study the elements of a story Mrs. Kellenberger What a great start! We extended our place value models from the 1 cm cubed unit up to the millions place. Students discovered that a cube of a million centimeters would be as tall, wide, and deep as a meter. Then they theorized about billions of cubes. We are writing daily about everything that catches the interest of our young authors. In science, they developed classification systems just like scientists
have for animals, except we used our shoes! October 27-31, 2003 The slogan for this year is “We’re Way Too Cool for Drugs.” Monday, 10-27: Wear Red Kay Ray will visit our campus to sell Green Out T-Shirts on Thursday, 10-2 at 7:20 a.m. |
